Tips For Keeping Your Piano In-Tune Longer

If you have a piano in your home, you likely know the importance of making sure that it is in tune. If you have perfect pitch, meaning that you can hear a pitch and identify what note it is, it can be grating to have a child play an out of tune piano because it will sound like he or she is only playing wrong notes. An in-tune piano is also helpful if you want to use your piano for recitals or to play for relatives. However, piano tuners can be expensive. You might want to reduce the amount of times per year that you have to have your piano tuned. Here are some tips for keeping your piano in-tune as long as possible.
1. Make Sure To Keep Your Piano Out of Direct Sunlight
Pianos tend to be made out of wood. This means that any direct sunlight that the piano is exposed to is going to result in the wood swelling with the heat of the sun. This can throw your piano out of tune very quickly. By moving your piano out of direct sunlight, you can reduce the chances that this is going to happen. If you are unable to move your piano because it is too heavy or because it would scratch your floors, you can get in the habit of closing any curtains that would cast light on the piano or invest in a piano cover that is designed to protect it from the UV rays and the heat of the sun.
2. Make Sure Your Piano is in a Room That Has a Controlled Temperature
Next, make sure that your piano is in a room that has temperature controls so that you can keep the piano at a temperature that is not too hot and not too cold. The piano's wood will contract when is cold. Try to keep your piano at a temperature between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
3. Make Sure You Control Humidity
Finally, be sure that you control the humidity around your piano. This is important because it will allow you to make sure that the wood of your piano doesn't become saturated and swell or become too dry and contract. Use a humidifier and a dehumidifier as necessary in order to make sure that you keep humidity levels around 42%. This will help keep your piano in tune longer.
